Adaptation...A way of life...

After gaining background knowledge of adaptations, squid, and the squid’s many adaptations, our class dissected squid last week.  Based on your knowledge, which adaptation do you believe is the most important for the squid?

Your response will be graded using the following criteria:
  1. Mechanics: Your comment should be written in complete sentences with very few spelling, punctuation, or capitalization errors.
  2. Audience: Your writing is clear and explains ideas so readers outside of our classroom understand them.
  3. Content: The content is accurate and shows the writer understands the science concepts presented.

  1. I think the ink is the most important adaptation for the squid because if they dont sense a predtor right away, they can use their ink for back up.

  2. The adaptation that the squid needs the most is the communication. If it did not have communication then he could not tell the others that their is a enemy so he could have help. Also he could not tell the others were good food is.That is why the squid need communication.

  3. I think the most important adaptation is the beak. The beak provides a way to eat and digest food easier. As the squid is catching its prey, it breaks down the prey into tiny little pieces down the esophagus to the squid's brain. If the squid did not have a beak, all the food that the squid eats would damage his brain. Without this important adaptation the squid would get seriously hurt or die. This is why I thought the beak was the most important adaptation.

  4. I think that the most important adaptation a squid needs to have is camouflage. Without camouflage the squid would not be able to blend in without being seen by their predator or prey. On the top of the squid it is spotted so it looks like the ocean floor. The predator would think it was just part of the ground. This would protect the squid from getting eaten. On the bottom of the squid it is clear so its prey on the bottom of the squid would think it is the water that is glowing from the sun. If they weren't clear on the bottom they would be seen and the prey would try to swim away. Then, the squid wouldn't get to eat as much and maybe die. Those two reasons are why camouflage is the most important adaptation a squid has.

  5. The adaptation that I predict the squid needs the most is the tentacles. The tentacles are used for grabbing its prey and bringing it to its beak. If the squid doesn't have tentacles, they wouldn't be able to grab its prey. The squid wouldn't be able to feed properly if it didn't have tentacles. This is what adaptation I think is the most important.

  6. The adaptation that I think is most useful for the squid is the spots on the top of the Mantle because when it is swimming the squid is not always at the top of the water so when it is swimming normally predators the are above him/her they will think they are just looking at the ground instead of their prey. The bottom of the mantle is smooth without virtually any spots so when it is going after it's prey the prey will be looking at the squid and be thinking that he is just looking at the top of the water. I think that is the most important adaptation.

  7. The most necessary adaptation needed for the squid in my opinion would be the beak. Why it's the most necessary is because without it, it could not eat. Because the tentacles just grab the prey, the beak is what actually eats it. If you could not eat you could not live. Also, it provides protection from predators also. That's why I believe the beak is the most important adaptation for the squid.

  8. I think the most important thing the squid needs is it's suction cups for protection. It needs that protection because they have to grip their prey. After they do that they can eat with the beak. So what I think is the beak and the suction cups.

  9. I think that the squid’s ability to change its color is the most important adaption. I think this because if the squid is in danger it can flash bright red to signal for the threat to back off. Or if it is not in danger the squid can change back to brown or white (depending on the type of squid) because it is relaxed. This helps the squid to camouflage and scare away predators.

I agree with Emily. The squid's beak allows it to tear its prey into smaller bits so it can pass through the digestive system.

  11. I think the most important adaptation is the ink sack. I think the most important adaptation is the ink sack beacuse if needed they can spray ink at predetors

  12. I think that the squid's most important adaptation is it's ink. If any of their other ways to scare off predators, they use their ink to confuse then as the squid quickly evacuates the area or goes to hide.

  13. In my opinion, the squid's camoflauge is the most important adaptaion. The squid's back has a faint speckled paddern, desinged to look like the ocean floor. The squid's underbelly is a kind of almost transparent, creamy white which is desinged to look like the surface of the water. This adaptaion helps hunting ahd hiding, which are two of an ocean orginism's most imporatant aspects.

  14. I think that the squid's ink is its most important adaptation because if it is being chased by a predator all it has to do is shoot it's ink and the predator has lost most of it's ability to see anything. That is the reason that I believe that the ink of the squid is the most important adaptation of the squid.

  15. I think that the most important adaptation is the ability to tear apart their prey with its beak. I think this is the most importance because this allows they squid to eat thing that are a little bit tougher to eat. This is also very important because the they would not be able to eat its main food source because their beak is like our teeth. If we do not have teeth we can only eat a couple of foods. If the squid did not have its beak it would have to re-adapt and have to find other food sources.

  16. I think the most important adaptation is the Siphon. The reason i think that is because the siphon helps the squid escape from attacks.
The second reason is it can spray ink. That is its last defense move. When they ink it obscures an animals viscous so its harder for them to see. Those are the reasons I think that squids most useful adaptation is the siphon.

  17. I think the squid's ability to change color is the most important adaption. This is because when the squid is hunting and if the pray looks up it sees the ocean which is really the squid. Also when it is hunting the predators look down all it sees is the ocean, which is really the squid. The ability to change color or camouflage helps it catch prey and not get eaten.

  18. I believe that the squid's most useful adaptation is it's ink. If there is danger that the squid cannot fight or is stronger than the squid, it can spew it's ink and get away before the predator knows it left. It may also teach that predator a lesson and make it stay away.

  19. I think the most important adaptions of the squid is its suckers. The squid has the suckers to help catch prey and the abitlty to use movement i stead of eye site to help find and catch prey. There is lots of sucker on the 8 of the legs.

  20. I think that the most important part of the squid is their ability to flash their colors. The reason that I think that the ability to flash colors is because the squid uses that to confuses or disorient the prey’s sense of direction. The squid can drive it’s prey into rocks and then their dinner. That is why I believe that the color changing effects are the most important part of the squid.

  21. The most important adaptation is the mantel because to get away from the organisms that eat them, they have to swim. Sight won’t help them, neither would it be helpful for hearing the prey. As a result, they have to find them playing “Marko Polo” by feeling around, so the squid has to have an aerodynamic head to go faster in the water.

  22. The most important adaptation for the squid for my idea is the way the squid is shaped of the tube for how fast it can get away from the enemy or to catch its prey. It also helps by the different shades of color on both sides of it’s front and back of the tube. Without the tube the squid can not swim and if can not swim he can not get his food and definitely the squid will die.

  23. The most important squid adaptation is the ink. When a squid is in danger, the squid uses its ink to attack the predator. Their ink is used as a last defense and can help them escape even after they are caught. By momentarily stunning their attacker, the squid can still be able to survive.

  24. I believe the most important adaptation of the squid is the beak. The beak allows the squid to digest food properly. Without it, the squid could choke.

  25. I think the most important adaptation of a squid is there tentacles. Without tentacles the squids could not grad and kill their pray. Without being able to kill their pray, the squids will not eat enough to stay alive. Trying to grad food with just their beek would probably be very difficult to do.

  26. I think the most important adaptation of the squid is the tentacles. I think the tentacles are important because they probably would not be able to survive without them. They use them to catch their prey so they can eat them and they wouldn't be able to catch their food and they would die without food.
